Welcome to a comprehensive sports fan's travel guide to Denver Sports Events.

Denver is a vibrant city with 300 days of annual
sunshine, year-round adventure and the breathtaking Rocky Mountains in our backyard. From a thriving arts
and culture scene, world class attractions and endless shopping possibilities, to nationally recognized chefs, exciting nightlife and abundant outdoor recreation, Denver welcomes you to experience, explore and discover how the Mile High City will awaken your senses like nowhere else.

Sitting pretty at 5,280 feet above sea level in Colorado's Rocky Mountains midway between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean, the Denver area is home to 2.5 million people who don’t seem to mind at all its 300 days of sunshine a year. Long a celebrated outdoor sports mecca, Denver's cultural attractions and easy urban lifestyle have taken centerstage with brick industrial buildings sprouting stylish lofts, restaurants, shops and nightclubs. Now, with the world's second-largest performing arts center and Daniel Libeskind's addition to the Denver Art Museum, the "Mile High City" continues to ascend in stature among American cities.

Sports Teams and Events

There are currently thirteen metropolitan areas that have at least one team in each major sports league. Their principal cities are often said to have the "Grand Slam."
Denver is one of those cities.

Denver is home to many sports teams and belongs to a select group
of U.S. cities with teams from four major sports. The Denver Broncos
of the NFL have been able to draw crowds of nearly 70,000 since their AFL origins in the early 1960s and continue to draw fans today to their current home Invesco Field at Mile High. The Broncos has advanced to the Super Bowl six times and won back-to-back in 1998 and '99.

In the 1980s and 1990s, one of the top priorities of former Mayor
Federico Peña was bringing major league baseball to the city, an effort which culminated in the construction of Coors Field and the creation
of the Colorado Rockies as an expansion franchise in 1993.

Denver is also home to the Colorado Avalanche, a National Hockey
League team that relocated from Quebec City in 1995. They have won two Stanley Cups (1996 and 2001) while in Denver and play at Pepsi Center, which also hosts the Denver Nuggets of the National Basketball Association, the Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League and the Colorado Crush of the Arena Football League.

The 2008 Denver Broncos season was the franchise's 49th season
for the team (their 39th season in the National Football League).
They improved from their 7-9 record from 2007 but failed to make
the playoffs with an 8-8 record. On December 30, 2008, two days
after the regular season ended, Mike Shanahan was fired as the
Broncos head coach.

The Broncos won their first 3 games of the season against the Oakland
Raiders, 41-14, San Diego Chargers, 39-38, and New Orleans Saints,
34-32, before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, 33-19, in week 4.

However on December 28, 2008 the Broncos lost to the San Diego
Chargers leaving both teams at 8-8. They would be the first team in
NFL history to enter the final three weeks of a regular season with a
three-game lead and lose all three games. Based on the San Diego
Chargers AFC West record of 5-1 to the Broncos 3-3, the San Diego
Chargers clinched the AFC West.

On December 30, 2008 Shanahan was fired as head coach and on
January 11, Josh McDaniels was hired as the new Broncos coach.

Ending a turbulent transition period from Mike Shanahan to Josh
McDaniels, on April 2, 2009, the team resorted to trading Pro Bowl QB Jay Cutler and a fifth round draft pick from the Broncos to the Chicago Bears for Kyle Orton, 2 first-round draft picks, and a third round pick.

The Colorado Rockies were established in 1993 and play in the West
Division of the National League. The team is named after the Rocky
Mountains, which pass through Colorado, just west of Denver.
The Rockies play their home games at Coors Field in downtown Denver.

Following multiple losing seasons, the Rockies won the National League pennant for the first time in franchise history during the 2007 season.

The Rockies ended the 2008 season finishing third in the National League West with a 74–88 record, failing to make the playoffs. The team got rid of hitting coach Alan Cockrell, third base coach Mike Gallego and bench coach Jamie Quirk after the disappointing season. The Rockies also traded away Matt Holliday to the Oakland Athletics for pitchers Huston Street and Greg Smith, and outfielder Carlos González

After a poor start (19-28) to the 2009 season, Clint Hurdle was fired
on May 29. His successor as manager is Jim Tracy, who was originally
hired as bench coach for the Colorado Rockies in November 2008. In June 2009, the team rapidly improved and by the end of June, the Rockies set a franchise record for victories in a month with 21 in a 28 game stretch (one win better than the September 2007 Rocktober run).

On August 24, the Rockies faced the San Francisco Giants in what ended up being a 14 inning game which lasted close to 5 hours(4:57), the second longest game in Rockies history.

The Colorado Avalanche are members of the Northwest Division of
the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The
Avalanche have won the Stanley Cup twice, in 1996 and 2001. The franchise was founded in Quebec and were the Quebec Nordiques until moving to Denver, Colorado in 1995. The Avalanche have won eight division titles and went to the playoffs in each of their first 10 seasons
in Denver, with the streak ending in 2007.The Avalanche are the only team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup their first season after a re-location.

The 2008–09 season was the worst season the Colorado Avalanche
have seen so far. Posting up a record of 32-45-5, finishing 15th in the
Western Conference (28th overall), and recording the fewest amount
of points since their days in Quebec with 69.The Avs missed the post
season for only the second time since movingto Denver, the second
time in three seasons.

On April 13, 2009, just one day after the end of the season, the Avs relieve Francois Giguere of his general manager duties. Colorado will go on to receive the highest draft pick in Avalanche history, third overall.
That pick turned out to be Brampton Battalion star Matt Duchene

On June 3, 2009, the Avalanche relieved head coach Tony Granato,
of his respective duties. The following day, Joe Sacco was named head coach. Sacco was the head coach of the Avalanche's American Hockey
League (AHL) affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters, as well as the assistant
coach of Team USA at the 2009 IIHF World Championship.

On July 9, 2009, Joe Sakic, the only team captain the Avs have ever known, retired after 20 seasons in the NHL. His #19 will hang next to Ray Bourque's #77 and Patrick Roy's #33 over the ice at Pepsi Center during a special ceremony before the 09-10 season opening game against the San Jose Sharks scheduled for October 1, 2009. On September 11, 2009, the Avs named Adam Foote the second captain in the team's history since moving to Denver.

The Denver Nuggets emerged from the original, most western team (Waterloo Hawks) the 1948-49 Denver Nuggets in the NBA The
commonly overlooked, and far to often ignored, pioneering Nuggets
team was the first team to charter a plane. The inaugural Nuggets
season (11-51) was shared with the NBA. Then came the Denver
Rockets (who were previously called the Denver Larks), a charter franchise in the American Basketball Association founded in 1967.

On July 16, at the end of the 2007–08 NBA season, the Nuggets traded former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Camby to the Los Angeles Clippers for a second-round draft pick (that was then traded to the New York Knicks for Renaldo Balkman), which was often criticized by fans. This trade was to give the Nuggets salary cap flexibility.

On November 3, 2008, guard Allen Iverson was traded to the Detroit Pistons for Chauncey Billups, Antonio McDyess, and Cheikh Samb (part of the trade exception was used from the Marcus Camby trade to allow the deal to go through). McDyess was waived though on November 10, 2008, and he returned to Detroit shortly afterwards.

With Carmelo Anthony averaging 22.8 ppg and Billups averaging 6.4 assists in the 2008–09 NBA season, the Nuggets accomplished a great deal of franchise milestones. Their 54–28 record matched the most wins the franchise has gotten since their induction in the NBA, their 27–14 start was also a record for wins in the first half of a season. This also marked the first time in the franchise's history the team has gotten back-to-back 50-win seasons. They led the Northwest division for much of the season, eventually winning the division and placing for #2 in the Western Conference, matching the highest the team has ever been seeded for the playoffs. General Manager Mark Warkentien won the NBA Executive of the Year Award for the Nuggets improvement.

They lost the first game of the Western Conference Finals against
the Los Angeles Lakers but won the second game to tie the series 1-1.
Carmelo Anthony became the first Denver player to score at least 30 points in five consecutive playoff games since the Nuggets joined the NBA in 1976. They lost the series 4-2, ending Denver's longest playoff run in team history.

On July 13, 2009, the Nuggets traded a 2nd round draft pick to the Detroit Pistons for Arron Afflalo (part of the trade exception from the Iverson trade was used to allow the deal to go through) and Walter Sharpe. Afflalo replaces starting guard Dahntay Jones who signed with the Indiana Pacers. However, on August 10, the Nuggets lost forward Linas Kleiza who signed with the Olympiacos Piraeus of the Greek League
